Retired Marine and Veteran Advocate Dave Denhardt | Superhero Pod | KNE Connects Episode 10
Dave Denhardt is a retired soldier from the United States Marine Corps and the Army National Guard. In 2012, while serving in Afghanistan, his camp was hit by several rockets, causing him to have a traumatic brain injury. Despite wanting to stay with his fellow soldiers, he was ordered to go back to the U.S. Despite having a litany of disablements, Dave continues to raise money and awareness for various veteran and disabled veteran programs. He started the Motor City Veterans Hockey Association (MCVHA), which provides "veterans and family members of all experience and ability the opportunity to develop their hockey skills and take part in outreach activities."
In the episode, Dave gives fantastic insight on what a disabled veteran goes through each day and gives his thoughts on the growing suicide rate for veterans. Although grim at times, the conversation is heartfelt, honest and informative.
Dave is also involved with the Wounded Warrior Project, which is a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans of the military actions following September 11, 2001. Dave has a lovely wife, daughter and service dog. He lives in Shelby Township, Michigan.
